New US definition for 'healthy' foods: what foods can claim to be ‘healthy’ and how does it compare with Australian requirements?
On 28 September 2022, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a proposed regulatory definition of the claim ‘healthy’. This proposed amendment aims to better align ‘healthy’ claims in the US with current US Dietary Guidelines. This article examines the context and consequences of the proposed amendment to the FDA’s definition of ‘healthy’ and compares this definition with the equivalent but quite different regulatory requirements in Australia.
