On 4 November 2022, Food Standards Australia New Zealand approved Application A1249 to permit the use of ‘plant sterols’ as a novel food in plant-based milk alternatives. This article explains these new permissions and explores the regulatory issues regarding the use of plant sterols in other circumstances.
