Concerns over Senate inquiry for meat and meat analogue producers and processors

In February 2022, the Australian Federal Senate completed its inquiry into the labelling of plant-based alternative meat products. Its report considered the definitions of meat and other animal products. It made nine recommendations including the imposition of a mandatory regulatory framework for plant-based food labelling as well as developing a national standard to restrict the use of “meat category brands” to animal protein products. This article discusses the implications and potential issues for the Australian food industry.
