Industrial chemicals in cosmetics under Australian law: transition from NICNAS to AICIS

Since 1990, the introduction of an industrial chemical as an ingredient or component of a cosmetic has been regulated in Australia through a regulatory framework known as the National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme (NICNAS). On 1 July 2020, NICNAS was replaced by the Australian Industrial Chemicals Introduction Scheme (AICIS). This article explains the important changes and transitional information for the AICIS scheme upon its introduction.
