On what basis is the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) able to stop supply of a product within the Australian market? In January 2020, the APVMA issued an order to stop the supply of a particular insecticide product within Australia. This article examines the regulatory processes for importers or manufacturers undertaking to supply chemicals into Australia. This article starts with the role of the APVMA and analyses the broader issues to be faced in dealing with chemicals that are used as inputs in Australia’s food supply chain before processing and manufacture of the final food or beverage product.
