The problem for food packaging innovations against the existing constraints of Australian food labelling compliance regulation

Nowadays, purchasing food is not solely driven by a consumer’s desire to fulfill her or his nutritional needs. Instead, a large part of the purchase decision is based on the consumer’s values. At the same time, technology has become a vital part of everyday life. Consumers want to make informed decisions and in doing so, new generations expect more transparency from retailers and food producers that go beyond the mandatory requirements of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. This article addresses the current food regulatory framework in Australia and New Zealand regarding labels, the innovative formats and technologies associated with food labels, and how they fit within this framework.
