The regulatory framework issues for konjac in Australia

Since the early 2000s when mini-jelly cups containing konjac were banned from being sold or imported into Australia, it appears that konjac is making a come-back. Konjac is now being reintroduced into Australia in more innovative forms, such as konjac gum, for its binding and textural properties especially in vegan foods. This article explores the existing regulation of konjac in Australia and Europe, as well as two key questions which need to be considered when assessing whether konjac can be compliantly added to food sold in Australia.
