Origin claims based on geographical indicators

The imposition of a new Country of Origin Labelling scheme has reinforced the importance of origin claims for both food businesses and consumers.  While the food industry has been busy ensuring they comply with the new system, it is important to remember that a product’s Country of Origin Label is but one method of making an origin claim. 

Many products make use of a geographical indicator which can infuse the origins of the product in its overall branding.  This article looks at developments in the law of geographical indicators, including how businesses can enforce and protect them, the special protections in the area of wine, and the potential for further protection through new international agreements.
