Australian Nutrition Data – Which source?

Many years ago, Australia was one of the first countries to mandate the use of Nutrition Information panels (NIPs) on the vast majority of packaged foods. Within the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (‘ANZFSC’ or ‘the Food Standards Code’) there are clauses that describe the permitted data sources and methods to be used in sourcing the nutrition information of the individual ingredients that may be used in a manufactured food.

This article will discuss the different collections of Nutrition data supplied or supported by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) together with their origins, purposes and differences. Some discussion will be included on the comparison of Australia data with internationally accepted nutrition data sources from USA-FDA and UK.
