Country of origin labelling for food in assisted service display cabinets

Australia’s new country of origin labelling requirements, which are mandatory on 1 July 2018, apply to food that is sold for human consumption, where “selling” includes “displaying for sale”. This article explores the risk of these requirements becoming applicable to food displayed in assisted service display cabinets (such as deli cabinets) and whether such food is “packaged” or “unpackaged” for the purposes of the new country of origin labelling laws and when this may extend to other types of assisted service displays.
