The proposed new Health Claims Standard, for which a Final Assessment Report is due shortly, will permit the making of certain substantiated health claims. Prior to the introduction of the new Standard, health claims have not been permitted on food labels, with only a few exceptions. The new Health Claims Standard in its current form is likely to have a significant impact on many industries including the dairy industry. This paper, which was published as a peer-reviewed article in the Australian Journal of Dairy Technology, looks at the impact, including threats, opportunities and challenges that the Standard poses to the dairy industry and other food suppliers.

- This article explores the current legal regulation of alcohol and the marketing and labelling laws for selling alcohol in Australia. Recent announcements by the Federal government to tackle Australia’s binge-drinking culture have highlighted the need to review the current rules and their enforcement. The Prime Minister announced a $53 million responsible drinking campaign on 8 March 2008. We examine some of the relevant policy proposals announced so far to discourage excessive alcohol consumption and the existing regulatory framework, laws and codes.
