The challenge for the dairy industry arising from the new Health Claims Standard: an impetus for innovation
Date Published17 March 2008
The proposed new Health Claims Standard, for which a Final Assessment Report is due shortly, will permit the making of certain substantiated health claims. Prior to the introduction of the new Standard, health claims have not been permitted on food labels, with only a few exceptions. The new Health Claims Standard in its current form is likely to have a significant impact on many industries including the dairy industry. This paper, which was published as a peer-reviewed article in the Australian Journal of Dairy Technology, looks at the impact, including threats, opportunities and challenges that the Standard poses to the dairy industry and other food suppliers.
This article is a peer reviewed article which was published in August 2007 in The Australian Journal of Dairy Technology (Volume 62, Number 2).
